The Province of Antofagasta, known in Spanish as Provincia de Antofagasta, is one of three provinces that make up the northern Chilean corridor and part of the country's system of provincial divisions. It lies in northern Chile within the larger administrative Antofagasta region (designated II by Chile's regional numbering) and gives its name to that region (Antofagasta (II)).

Location and landscape

Stretching along the Pacific coast and ascending toward the Andean foothills, the province occupies part of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. Terrain ranges from coastal plains and cliffs to salt flats and arid valleys. A coastal fog, locally called camanchaca, can bring moisture to immediate shore areas, but average precipitation remains extremely low.

Administrative role and urban centre

As a provincial unit, it groups municipal governments that coordinate local services, land use and transport links. The provincial capital is the port city of Antofagasta, a commercial and logistical hub whose harbour and associated facilities support maritime trade and the export of mineral products (port and commerce).

Economy and infrastructure

Mining—especially copper extraction and its associated services—dominates the province's economy. Large mining operations in the region rely on ports, roads and railways to move ore and supplies. The province also supports construction, shipping, regional services and a modest tourism sector focused on desert landscapes, coastal scenery and astronomy-related visits; the wider region hosts several high-altitude observatories.

History and significance

The coastal area has long been important for resource exploitation and maritime trade. Territorial boundaries in the late 19th century changed during regional conflict, after which the area became integrated into the modern Chilean state. Today the province remains strategically important for Chile's export economy and for connections between Pacific ports and inland mining districts (regional overview).
