Popol Vuh

Popol Vuh took its name from the Popol Vuh, a colonial-era manuscript that preserves the creation myths and traditions of the Quiché Maya. That text is associated with the highland regions of Guatemala, where the Quiché people lived.

The group was a German ensemble often classified within the Krautrock movement. It was established in 1970 by pianist and keyboard player Florian Fricke. Early collaborators included Holger Trulzsch on percussion and Frank Fiedler responsible for electronics and sound processing.

Across roughly two decades the lineup shifted and expanded. Notable members and contributors included:

  • Daniel Fichelscher — guitar and drums
  • Robert Eliscu — woodwinds and oboe
