Who were the polygars and why they resisted

Polygars were regional military and revenue chiefs who controlled small fortified estates (palayams). They raised troops, administered justice, and collected taxes under earlier South Indian dynasties. As the East India Company expanded, its efforts to centralize revenue collection and to reduce the military power of these chiefs provoked resistance.
