Appearance and varieties

Adults are compact and laterally flattened, with sizes that commonly reach about 2–3 inches (5–7 cm) depending on the species and line. Selective breeding has produced many color and pattern morphs, including red, yellow, mottled, and marble variants. The group includes closely related forms such as the southern platy and the variable platy; hybrids with swordtails are also frequent in the pet trade.

Natural habitat and range

In the wild, platies inhabit warm, slow-moving waters of Mexico and Central America.
