Peter Maxwell Davies

Life and career

Born in Salford, Davies studied and worked in the north of England before becoming a central figure in Britain's postwar avant-garde. In the 1960s he helped establish an ensemble dedicated to new music, which gave a platform to experimental composers and performers. He later settled in the Orkney Islands, where the landscape and local history shaped much of his subsequent output and where he founded and shaped important cultural events.

Musical style and major works

Davies's early music embraced modernist techniques, including serial organization and a theatrical sense of gesture. He became noted for dramatic vocal works that blur the boundary between music and theatre. Later pieces often reintroduced modes, plainchant, and folk-like elements, creating a distinct synthesis of tradition and innovation. Among his best-known works are vividly programmatic orchestral pieces that sometimes feature unconventional forces, and operas and stage works that explore historical and mythical subjects.

Contributions and institutions

He co-founded ensembles devoted to contemporary repertoire and was instrumental in programming and commissioning new work. In Orkney he helped establish a festival that remains a focal point for chamber music, opera and new commissions. As a conductor and artistic director he mentored younger performers and promoted performance of new scores across Britain and internationally.

Honours, legacy and name

Davies received numerous official honours and held the historic post of Master of the Queen's Music, a role in which he also sought to bring contemporary composition to wider attention. He published writings on music and left a substantial catalogue that continues to be performed. Although commonly referred to by his full name, his friends knew him as "Max"; his family name was Davies and "Maxwell" was a middle name he adopted professionally.
