History and development

The airline in its modern form was established in the mid‑20th century and grew into Austria’s largest carrier. It began operating jet aircraft in the 1960s, acquiring its first jets around 1963 according to company records and period reports (1963). In 2000 the airline became a member of the global Star Alliance network Star Alliance, improving connectivity through partner airlines.

Operations and fleet

Austrian runs an integrated route network focused on Vienna and linking to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. Its fleet mixes narrow‑body aircraft for short and medium sectors with wide‑body jets for long‑haul services. The airline was state‑owned for many years before a privatization process began in the 2000s; the Austrian government sold its stake during that period (privatization). In 2009 the carrier became part of the Lufthansa Group when Lufthansa completed an acquisition (2009). Through membership of the Star Alliance and codeshare agreements, Austrian coordinates schedules and frequent‑flyer benefits with many partners.

Notable events and recent history

In April 2015 Austrian Airlines merged operations with regional subsidiary Tyrolean Airways to streamline services. Like other airlines, it faced major disruption during the COVID‑19 pandemic and temporarily reduced or suspended many flights in March 2020 as demand collapsed and travel restrictions were imposed. The airline has since adjusted capacity and scheduling in response to market conditions.
