Paulista Avenue

Avenida Paulista is one of the most important streets in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It is just under 3 kilometres long and is located on an elongated hill between the Bela Vista and Jardim Paulista neighbourhoods to the southwest of the city centre. It is served by a subway line and numerous buses.

Known as one of the most important financial centers of the city as well as one of its most prominent landmarks, the former avenue shows its importance as a center not only of business but also of entertainment and culture. There is a large amount of corporate headquarters, banks, consulates, hotels, hospitals like the traditional Santa Catarina Hospital and scientific institutions like the Institut Pasteur as well as cultural ones like the Museu de Arte de São Paulo.

Only a few of the houses from the initial development remain.

The street is closed to traffic every Sunday and is then only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Culture comes to the fore and locals use this day for live performances, shows or to market their art.
