Overview
Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 was a domestic scheduled service that on 22 May 2020 crashed during its final approach into Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. The flight originated at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore and impacted a residential area near Model Colony. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A320 operating a routine domestic connection.
The accident was rapid and catastrophic: of the 99 people on board, 97 died. One person on the ground was also killed, while nine people were reported injured — two occupants of the aircraft and seven people on the ground. Emergency teams responded quickly and survivors were pulled from wreckage and transported to nearby hospitals.
Aircraft, crew and circumstances
The A320 is a widely used short- to medium-haul jetliner. Flights in the approach phase require close coordination between pilots and air traffic control and rely on multiple systems for guidance. Initial reporting indicated the aircraft struck terrain near the runway while attempting to land; two passengers survived the crash and evacuation efforts were aided by local emergency services and airport responders.
Investigation and findings
Pakistani authorities recovered the flight recorders and opened a formal investigation involving the national aviation regulator and technical experts. Investigators examined cockpit voice and flight data recorders, air traffic control communications, maintenance history and crew actions. Public reports and inquiries focused on human factors, communications and aircraft systems; official analysis was intended to determine causal factors and recommend safety measures.
Following the accident, Pakistan International Airlines and regulators carried out safety reviews and inspections. The crash drew national and international attention to aircraft operations near built-up areas and to emergency preparedness for urban aviation incidents.
