Located at the southern end of Puget Sound on Budd Inlet, Olympia occupies a modest waterfront setting with nearby estuaries and protected bays. The surrounding region features forested hills and views of the Olympic Mountains across the water. The climate is typically temperate and maritime, with wet, mild winters and relatively dry summers, which supports mixed coniferous forest and a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.
History and government
The Olympia area was occupied for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples before Euro-American settlement. The city developed as a regional hub in the 19th century and became Washington's capital as state institutions consolidated in the area. Today Olympia is home to the Washington State Capitol campus and the offices of the state legislature and governor, making government services a central part of its identity and economy.
Economy, culture and civic life
Government employment is a major economic driver, supplemented by education, small business, arts organizations, and port activities. Olympia hosts farmers markets, festivals, and a lively local arts scene, including music venues, galleries and community theaters. The city emphasizes environmental stewardship, public parks, and waterfront access, which contribute to quality of life and local tourism.
