Overview
The North and Middle Andaman district is one of the three administrative districts of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It occupies a chain of islands in the northern and central reaches of the Andaman archipelago in the Bay of Bengal. The district headquarters is the town of Mayabunder. The total land area is about 3,251.85 km2, encompassing the larger North Andaman and Middle Andaman islands together with many smaller islets and coastal inlets.
Geography and environment
The district’s landscape combines low coastal plains, mangrove-lined creeks, interior hills and dense tropical forest. It supports coral-fringed shorelines and seagrass beds offshore. The climate is tropical with a marked monsoon season; rainfall and warm temperatures sustain evergreen and moist deciduous vegetation that provide habitat for diverse birds, reptiles and marine species. Several parts of the district are important for coastal conservation and marine biodiversity.
Administration and settlements
Mayabunder functions as the administrative centre, offering district offices, markets and basic services. Smaller towns and villages are scattered along the main islands, linked chiefly by a network of roads, ferry routes and boat services. The district forms part of the Republic of India’s governance structure and is represented in local and territorial bodies that manage land use, development and conservation.
Economy and transport
Local livelihoods rely on fishing, small‑scale agriculture (coconut, tuber and fruit cultivation), forestry products and government services. Tourism centered on beaches, sport fishing, birdwatching and nature excursions contributes seasonally. Access to the district is commonly by scheduled ferries and passenger boats from other islands; limited air and maritime services connect the district to the territorial capital and the Indian mainland.
Culture, history and notable facts
The islands have a mixed population that includes settlers from mainland regions and indigenous communities; traditional skills such as boatbuilding and fishing remain important. Historically the wider Andaman group has been shaped by maritime trade, colonial presence and later administrative reorganisation. The district is valued for its relative remoteness, natural scenery and opportunities for low‑impact ecotourism.
