History and development

The ensemble traces its origins to an orchestral group founded in 1926 as the New Symphony Orchestra, one of the first large professional orchestras established in Japan. In the decades that followed it evolved into the Japan Symphony Orchestra and grew in size and profile as Western symphonic repertoire became increasingly central to Japanese musical life. When the broadcaster began providing regular support in 1951, the orchestra adopted its current name and developed a close relationship with NHK that brought frequent broadcast performances and wider public exposure.
