Origins and history

The town was established in the early 20th century by Greek refugees from the town of Mudanya on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara. The prefix Nea means "new" and reflects this population transfer following the population exchanges and upheavals in Asia Minor. Over decades the settlement grew from a refugee village into an organized town with a fish market, municipal services and a compact urban center.

Nea Moudania is the seat of its municipality and a local administrative center.
