Geography and administration

Located in the central lowlands, Nakhon Pathom features flat rice paddies, orchards and a network of irrigation canals. History

The area around Nakhon Pathom is one of Thailand's oldest urban centres with archaeological evidence linking it to the Dvaravati culture, an early Mon-influenced civilization in central Thailand. Centuries later the site continued as an important religious and administrative centre; its most prominent monument, Phra Pathom Chedi, was reconstructed in modern times and remains a focal point of religious life.
