The ATP operates a headquarters and an executive structure that administers day-to-day operations, player relations and event coordination. History and development

Formed in the early 1970s by professional players seeking a stronger voice in the sport, the ATP evolved from a players’ council into a global organization. Over decades it expanded responsibilities from representation to managing a tiered tour system and a widely used computer ranking that ranks players by performance across sanctioned events.

Tournaments and rankings

The ATP oversees the ATP Tour, which groups top-level men's tournaments into categories that reflect ranking points and prestige. Important categories include:

• Masters 1000 events — high-value tournaments just below the Grand Slams
• ATP 500 and ATP 250 series — regular tour events offering differing point levels
• ATP Challenger Tour — a developmental circuit for rising professionals
• ATP Finals — the year-end championship for the season's best performers

While the ATP administers rankings and most tour events, the four Grand Slam tournaments are run by separate national bodies and coordinate with the ATP on calendar and ranking points.
