Overview
Mullaitivu District is a coastal district in the northeast of Sri Lanka. It is one of the country's districts, which function as the second-level administrative divisions. The district covers 2,617 square kilometres and forms part of the Northern Province. In local languages it is known as முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டம் (Tamil) and මුලතිවු දිස්ත්රික්කය (Sinhala). The administrative centre is the town of Mullaitivu.
Geography and environment
The district faces the Bay of Bengal to the east and is characterised by low-lying coastal plains, a chain of lagoons, rivers and wetland areas. Coastal ecosystems include sandy beaches, mangrove patches and fish-rich estuaries. Inland areas are generally flat with pockets of scrub and small-scale agriculture. The shoreline, wetlands and coastal waters are important both for local livelihoods and biodiversity.
History and recent developments
Mullaitivu has been shaped by modern political and humanitarian events. The district suffered major disruption during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict and experienced extensive displacement; large-scale resettlement and reconstruction have taken place since the end of major hostilities. It was also affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which damaged coastal settlements and infrastructure. Recovery and rebuilding remain important themes in the district’s recent history.
Economy and society
The local economy depends largely on smallholder agriculture, paddy cultivation, and coastal fisheries. Many communities rely on lagoon and marine fishing, as well as seasonal crops and subsistence farming. Public services, local markets and community organisations have expanded as families returned and reconstruction progressed. Tamil is the dominant language and local culture reflects the broader traditions of the Northern Province.
Administration, transport and notable facts
Mullaitivu District is divided into divisional secretariats and smaller local units that manage civil administration, development and social services. Road connections link the district to neighbouring districts and provincial centres, while the nearest major air and sea facilities are outside the district. The district is notable for its coastal geography, the process of post-conflict resettlement, and ongoing efforts to restore infrastructure and livelihoods.
