Overview
Mount Stromlo is a prominent hill to the west of central Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. It rises to about 751 m above sea level and stands roughly 200 m above the surrounding plains (elevation reference). The mountain forms a recognizable landmark on the western approach to the city and combines scientific, utility and recreational roles.
Geography and access
The summit and flanks are accessible by a network of public roads and management tracks. Road access is provided from the south via Cotter Road and from the east and north via Uriarra Road; a short spur from Cotter Road near Duffy reaches the peak. The slopes drain toward catchments that feed Canberra’s water-supply system, and a major water treatment plant serving the city lies nearby.
Mount Stromlo Observatory and research
Atop the mountain is the Mount Stromlo Observatory, a long-established astronomical facility operated by the Australian National University. The site has been used for optical astronomy, instrument development and education. The observatory complex has undergone several phases of upgrade and repair and plays a continuing role in Australian astronomical research (observatory).
History, bushfires and recovery
Mount Stromlo has a history tied to science and to the development of Canberra’s infrastructure. The area was severely affected by the 2003 Canberra bushfires, which destroyed buildings, research equipment and extensive pine plantations on the mountain. Since then, much of the site has been rebuilt and re-planted, with new facilities and improved fire-resilience measures.
Recreation and conservation
Below the summit the landscape includes Stromlo Forest Park and a network of trails used for mountain biking, running and walking. These recreational facilities were expanded after the 2003 fires and now attract locals and visitors who use purpose-built tracks, picnic areas and lookout points. Management balances public access with conservation of remnant native vegetation and protection of nearby water catchments.
