Moder (river)

Physical characteristics

The Moder rises in the eastern foothills of the Vosges and pursues a generally north-easterly course across the plain of Alsace before reaching the Rhine. Its length is modest by European standards (on the order of several dozen kilometres) and it drains a local agricultural and forested basin. The river receives a number of smaller streams and conveys seasonal flows to the Rhine, which it joins as a left-side tributary of that large international river (Rhine).

Towns, land use and human impact

Along its course the Moder passes through or near several communes of Bas-Rhin, including historically significant local towns such as Haguenau. The river has long been important for local agriculture, powering mills in earlier centuries and supporting irrigation and small-scale industry. Over time sections of the river have been modified for flood control, drainage and road crossings; it is not a major route for commercial navigation.

Ecology and conservation

The Moder and its floodplain host typical Central European freshwater habitats: slow-flowing stretches, riparian vegetation and wetlands that provide refuge for fish, amphibians and birds. Modern management balances agricultural use with efforts to maintain habitat quality; restoration or protection projects may target the reconnection of side channels and the improvement of water quality.
