History and Roman significance

Misenum was originally linked to the ancient settlement of Cumae before developing its own identity in the Republican and Imperial periods. In the 3rd century BC it suffered attacks during the Second Punic War and is recorded as being devastated by forces under Hannibal around 214 BC. Under Rome the site gained major importance as the home base of the imperial fleet (Classis Misenensis), which protected trade routes and the Tyrrhenian coast.

Key remains and features

The most famous surviving monument is the Piscina Mirabilis, an extensive Roman cistern roughly 70 by 30 metres in size, built to store fresh water for the fleet and nearby settlements. Vestiges of quays, warehouses and defensive works testify to Misenum’s maritime role. The promontory itself, sometimes called Capo Miseno, frames views across the gulf.

Landscape and geology

Misenum sits within the volcanic district known as the Phlegraean Fields. The present landscape features low hills and a string of crater lakes formed by past eruptions and subsidence. These geological processes shaped local soils, sheltered bays and the cluster of small lakes and wetlands that attract both residents and visitors.
