Overview

Middle East Airlines Flight 438 was a scheduled passenger service operating on 1 January 1976 between Beirut and Abu Dhabi. The aircraft, a Boeing 720B, departed Beirut and was cruising at high altitude when an explosive device detonated in the forward cargo hold. The airplane broke up in flight and crashed in north‑eastern Saudi Arabia; all 81 passengers and crew on board were killed.

Aircraft and operator

The flight was operated by Middle East Airlines (MEA), Lebanon's national carrier. The airframe was a Boeing 720B, a short‑ to medium‑range derivative of the 707 family designed for jet transport in the 1960s and 1970s. The flight used the callsign CEDAR JET 438. For basic location reference, the crash area is given at coordinates near Al Qaysumah.

Sequence of events

Shortly after reaching cruise altitude, investigators later determined that a bomb detonated in the forward cargo compartment. The explosion caused an in‑flight structural breakup at an altitude reported to be about 11,300 metres (37,100 ft). Wreckage fell to the ground approximately 37 km northwest of Al Qaysumah, Saudi Arabia, and the site has been cited in contemporary reports linked to the incident via crash location references.

Investigation and outcome

Post‑crash investigation concluded the immediate cause was an explosive device placed in the forward baggage area. No group or individuals were officially identified or prosecuted in connection with the attack, and the case remains unresolved in public records. The loss contributed to growing international concern in that era about airline security and the need for tighter screening of cargo and baggage.

Context and significance

The mid‑1970s saw a number of politically motivated attacks on civil aviation worldwide. Incidents like Flight 438 helped drive improvements in airport screening, baggage handling procedures and international cooperation on aviation security. The basic route and cities involved are commonly noted in summaries of the event; the flight originated in Beirut and was destined for Abu Dhabi, with technical details often cross‑referenced to Boeing model pages such as Boeing 720.
