Mayhem (Norwegian black metal band)

Formation and early line-up

The band was founded by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (better known as Euronymous), bassist Jørn Stubberud (Necrobutcher) and drummer Kjetil Manheim. The name "Mayhem" was taken from a Venom song, 'Mayhem with Mercy'. In the earliest phase the band used a mix of session and guest vocalists, including performers such as Messiah, and often functioned instrumentally during rehearsals.

Musical style and image

Musically, Mayhem favored high-speed riffs, tremolo picking, discordant harmonies and screamed or shrieked vocal delivery typical of the genre. Their recorded sound emphasized rawness and atmosphere over polished production.
