Marksmanship recognition usually reflects one of several performance levels such as marksman, sharpshooter, or expert. The basic award may be a colored ribbon; many services authorize small devices, clasps or attachments that show the weapon type (for example pistol or rifle) or a higher qualification level. The ribbon is worn according to uniform regulations and indicates sustained competence with issued firearms rather than combat action or valor.

Which services use it

Not every U.S. military branch uses a ribbon for marksmanship. The United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard have forms of marksmanship ribbons or similar awards. Other services, including the Army and Marine Corps, more commonly use metal badges or qualification badges instead. The ribbon form remains a quick visual cue of weapons qualification on service uniforms.

History, purpose and importance

The practice of awarding decorations for shooting proficiency developed alongside formalized qualification courses and competitive shooting in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Awards encourage safe handling and regular practice, help commanders assess personnel readiness, and support selection for competitive or specialized marksmanship teams. Qualifying at an above-average level on a recognized course is often the criterion for receiving the ribbon or an elevated device; meeting that standard is sometimes described simply as achieving an above-average score on qualification.

Variations and civilian or state-level recognition

State National Guard units and other organizations sometimes issue comparable ribbons or trophies to recognize top performers in state marksmanship competitions.
