Administration and communes

The provincial capital and seat of government is the city of Quilpué. Marga Marga comprises four communes: Quilpué, Villa Alemana, Limache and Olmué. These municipalities combine suburban districts that serve the greater Valparaíso metropolitan area with more rural and recreational valleys inland.

History and formation

Marga Marga was created in 2010 through an administrative reorganization that took two communes from the larger Valparaíso Province and two from the Province of Quillota. The new province aimed to provide more focused local governance and public services for rapidly growing urban and peri-urban communities. The transfer of communes from neighboring provinces is documented in the legislation and official notices that established the province; for example, the reallocation involved communes formerly in Valparaíso Province and in the Quillota Province.

Marga Marga occupies a transitional landscape between the coastal plain and the lower hills and valleys inland.
