Arrondissements of the Haute‑Loire department

Structure and function

An arrondissement is headed by a subprefect and has a chief town called a subprefecture; when the department's prefecture lies inside an arrondissement that prefecture also serves as the arrondissement's capital. The concept of an arrondissement as a departmental subdivision should not be confused with the municipal arrondissements found in some large cities. Arrondissements are further divided into communes and are useful for coordinating national services, statistical reporting and some administrative acts. The arrondissements of Haute‑Loire

• Le Puy‑en‑Velay — the prefecture of the department and the central arrondissement, hosting the departmental prefectural services and acting as the principal administrative hub.
• Brioude — a western arrondissement whose chief town is a subprefecture that provides local state services for its communes.
• Yssingeaux — an eastern arrondissement with its own subprefecture, serving more upland and rural territories of the department.

Each arrondissement contains numerous communes, the smallest units of local government; for discussion of communes see communes. History and notable distinctions

Arrondissements in France were created during administrative reforms that followed the Revolution and were standardised under the Consulate and Napoleonic administrations around 1800. They have since been adjusted by successive reforms but remain a stable element of state territorial administration. Departmental arrondissements differ from the municipal arrondissements of some French cities (often translated as boroughs), a distinction noted in comparative summaries at boroughs.
