Geography and environment

The territory includes mountainous, hilly and lowland zones. Higher elevations support coniferous and mixed forests, while valleys and plains are used for agriculture and pasture. The area has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Parts of the Central Balkan range and protected natural areas extend into the province, offering habitats for diverse flora and fauna and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Administrative structure

Administratively the province is divided into several municipalities, with the provincial seat in the city of Lovech. Major municipalities include Lovech, Troyan, Teteven, Lukovit, Letnitsa, Ugarchin, Yablanitsa and Apriltsi. These towns and their surrounding villages vary from industrial and service centres to mountain villages dependent on forestry, small-scale farming and tourism.

History and development

The region has a long history that traces back through Thracian, Roman and medieval Bulgarian periods to Ottoman rule and the modern Bulgarian state. Like much of inland Bulgaria, the province experienced economic and social change during modernization in the 19th and 20th centuries and later transitions in industry and agriculture.

In Lovech city the historic covered bridge by a famed Bulgarian builder and the restored fortress area are points of interest. Caves, river valleys and mountain trails — including notable cavities and karst formations — draw cavers and nature lovers. These features, together with traditional crafts and regional festivals, contribute to the province's cultural identity and tourism appeal.
