The arrondissement of Douai is an administrative subdivision in northern France. It lies within the Nord department and the larger Hauts-de-France region. The city of Douai serves as the arrondissement's administrative centre, where key prefectural services and local courts are located; Douai is often described as the arrondissement's capital and focal town (seat).

The territory combines urbanized municipalities, smaller towns and rural communes. It is part of the historic Douaisis area and sits close to larger urban agglomerations such as Lille. Landscape features include canals, former industrial sites and patches of agricultural land. The arrondissement comprises numerous communes organized for local governance and public services.

History and development

The Douai area developed around medieval market towns and later expanded during industrialization. In the 19th and 20th centuries nearby coal mining and associated industries shaped its economy and settlement patterns.
