Loja Province (Ecuador)

Geography and climate

The terrain is dominated by portions of the southern Andes. Elevations vary from lower fertile valleys to high páramo and mountain ridges; some areas rise above 3,000 meters. The province borders other Ecuadorian provinces and extends southward toward the international boundary with Peru. Microclimates are common, producing distinct agricultural zones and pockets of humid montane forest.

Ecology and Podocarpus National Park

A major natural highlight is Podocarpus National Park, which partly occupies the province. The park covers about 1,463 square kilometres and ranges in elevation from roughly 1,000 m to around 3,690 m. It protects extensive cloud forests and high-elevation habitats that support extraordinary biodiversity. Estimates suggest the park contains some 3,000–4,000 plant species, with over 40% considered endemic to the region. Human settlement in the area predates the Spanish conquest; the modern provincial identity developed through colonial and republican eras. Rural communities maintain agricultural practices and handicraft traditions that reflect a mix of indigenous and Spanish influences.

Economy and tourism

The provincial economy is diverse: agriculture (including coffee, grains and livestock), small-scale commerce, services and growing ecotourism connected to parks, reserves and scenic valleys such as Vilcabamba—known locally for its relaxed atmosphere and reputation for longevity. Visitors come for birdwatching, trekking, cultural events and to explore cloud forest biodiversity.
