Course, tributaries and hydrology

The Loire drains a large basin fed by several major tributaries, including the Allier, Vienne, Cher, Indre and Loir, and receives the Maine near Angers. Its flow varies seasonally, typically higher in cooler, wetter months and lower in summer. Near its mouth the river broadens into an estuary with tidal influence and coastal wetlands that are valuable for wildlife and coastal dynamics.

History, heritage and the Loire Valley

Historically the Loire served as a vital inland route for trade and communication and its floodplains supported rich agriculture. The valley became famed for a concentration of medieval and Renaissance châteaux, manor houses and designed landscapes; a central portion of the Loire Valley is internationally recognised for its cultural significance. The river supports diverse uses: agriculture and vineyards producing notable wines (for example Sancerre, Vouvray, Chinon, Anjou and Muscadet in different subregions), tourism, local fisheries and some hydroelectric and irrigation schemes. Its floodplain habitats — meadows, reedbeds and estuarine marshes — sustain birds, fish and aquatic plants, though pressures from river engineering, dams, pollution and land use change have affected some species. Contemporary management balances flood risk reduction, navigation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable regional development.
