Geography and landscape

Logan County occupies part of the High Plains, a broad, relatively flat region used extensively for dryland farming and ranching. One of the county's most striking geological features is a mile-long escarpment of Niobrara Formation sandstone and chalk cliffs, locally known as "Little Jerusalem." These layered cliffs rise to about 100 feet and resemble the Badlands-type formations found farther west; they preserve fossils and expose sedimentary structures that attract geologists and visitors interested in rugged prairie scenery.

History and development

The county developed with the westward expansion of settlement in the Great Plains and the growth of agriculture and transportation networks. Oakley grew as a local service center for ranching and grain farming and as a stop on east–west transportation routes.
