Overview

Lhuntse (also spelled Lhuentse) is one of the 20 dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan, located in the northeastern part of the kingdom. The district centre is the town of Lhuntse. The approximate geographic coordinates are 27°40′N 91°0′E. Lhuntse occupies steep, largely forested terrain and includes deep river valleys that contribute to its relative remoteness.

Geography and administration

Lhuntse is characterized by rugged Himalayan foothills, terraced fields and scattered villages. Administratively the district is subdivided into eight gewogs (village blocks) that provide local government and public services to small rural communities. The district headquarters coordinates education, health and resource management across these gewogs.

Economy and culture

The district economy is mostly agrarian, based on subsistence farming, livestock and small-scale horticulture. Lhuntse is widely recognized within Bhutan for its textile traditions: several valleys, most notably the village of Khoma, produce handwoven garments and traditional ikat patterns known locally as kushuthara or related woven fabrics. These textiles are valued for their color, technique and cultural significance.

History and notable features

Lhuntse contains historic religious sites and traditional dzongs (fortresses) that serve as regional religious and administrative centres. Many villages retain customary architecture and seasonal festivals, reflecting Tibetan-Bhutanese cultural influences. Because of its terrain and limited road access, Lhuntse has preserved many aspects of rural Bhutanese life.

Importance and access

The district is important for cultural heritage, biodiversity and upland water catchments that feed larger river systems downstream. Access can be challenging outside main routes; improvements in roads and communications have been gradual to balance development and conservation priorities. Visitors interested in textiles, rural culture and mountain landscapes often include Lhuntse on itineraries that focus on eastern Bhutan.
