KSpread — spreadsheet application from the KOffice suite

Features

KSpread supported multiple sheets in a single document and a variety of cell and sheet formatting options. Its capabilities included:

• More than one hundred built-in mathematical, statistical and text functions for formulas and calculations.
• Charting and graphical representation for tables and ranges.
• Templates and basic spell-checking to assist common document tasks.
• Hyperlinks, sorting and filter-like operations for organizing data.
• Scripting and automation through bindings for languages such as Python, Ruby and JavaScript, enabling custom extensions and batch processing.

File format and compatibility

The native KSpread document layout stored spreadsheet data as XML inside a compressed ZIP container, a compact XML+ZIP approach used by several contemporaneous office projects (XML in a ZIP). KSpread included import and export filters to interoperate with other formats: it could read and often import files produced by Microsoft Excel, Applix Spreadsheet, Quattro Pro, plain CSV files and spreadsheets from OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice. This made it suitable for exchanging data with users on other office platforms.

History and development

KSpread was developed as the spreadsheet module of KOffice during the 2000s. Over time the KDE community’s office software evolved: the KOffice project was succeeded by newer efforts and the spreadsheet role moved into later KDE-related suites and components. As desktop office suites consolidated and new projects emerged, the original KSpread codebase was largely superseded by successors that continued spreadsheet development under different component names and within different suites.

Uses, audience and distinctions

KSpread was aimed at KDE users and distributions that preferred lightweight, integrated desktop applications. It was suitable for personal budgeting, small data analysis tasks and educational use where full compatibility with larger proprietary suites was not essential. Compared with heavyweight alternatives like Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc, KSpread was notable for its integration with KDE and its open-source licensing, though it lacked some advanced enterprise features and extensive macro ecosystems found in larger commercial products.
