Overview

Krishnagiri district is an administrative district in the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India. Formed in the early 21st century by carving territory out of Dharmapuri, the district has a mix of agricultural lowlands and rocky hills. The municipal town of Krishnagiri serves as the district headquarters and administrative centre.

Geography and administration

The district occupies a transitional zone between the plains and the neighbouring highlands, giving it varied terrain and a landscape of hillocks and reservoirs. Administratively it is organised into several taluks and local bodies that manage rural and urban services. The district benefits from location along major road corridors that connect Tamil Nadu with neighbouring states, supporting trade and travel.

Economy and primary sectors

Agriculture and horticulture are major components of the local economy. Krishnagiri is particularly well known for mango cultivation and is regarded as one of the larger mango-producing districts in India; mango orchards and related trade play an important role in livelihoods and seasonal markets. Other activities include mixed farming, quarrying, and a developing base of small-scale industries and service enterprises.

History and development

Krishnagiri district was created from parts of Dharmapuri district to enable more focused local governance and development. Its name combines words meaning "black" and "hill", a reference to local rock formations. In recent decades the district has been part of state initiatives to introduce e‑Governance and streamline public services; it was among early pilot areas for online delivery of some revenue and social welfare functions under national projects.

Demographics and society

According to the 2011 census, the district's population was recorded at approximately 1,879,809, with a sex ratio of about 958 females per 1,000 males. The population comprises a mix of rural and urban communities, with agriculture-linked village life alongside growing towns and markets. Local culture reflects Tamil traditions, festivals and languages while also being influenced by proximity to neighbouring states.

  • Krishnagiri is widely recognised for its mango production and fruit trade: mangoes from the district reach regional markets during the season.
  • The district has participated in early e‑Governance pilots to improve citizen access to services and administration.

Krishnagiri continues to balance agricultural traditions with infrastructure and service improvements as it develops its role within the wider region.
