Geography and climate

The city occupies a position on the broad floodplain of the Kuban River, at the western edge of the North Caucasus foothills. History and development

Krasnodar began as a Cossack military settlement in the late 18th century and was originally named Yekaterinodar, often translated as "Catherine's Gift." It developed through the 19th and early 20th centuries as a regional trade and administrative centre. During the early Soviet period the town was renamed Krasnodar. Over time the city expanded from a fortress and market town into a modern urban centre with mixed industrial, administrative and cultural functions.

The city is also known for professional football clubs, public parks and a mixture of historical and Soviet-era architecture alongside newer commercial developments.

As a regional hub near the Black Sea, Krasnodar continues to function as an economic gateway for the Kuban agricultural region, a transportation junction and a centre for regional government and culture.
