Overview

Kovačevića potok (English: Kovacevici's stream) is a small mountain stream and a left-bank tributary of the Vrbanja River in the Kotor-Varoš municipality of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies between the settlements of Kruševo Brdo (upstream) and Šiprage (downstream) and drains a short, steep catchment on the western slopes of a modest local ridge. The watercourse is roughly three kilometres long and contributes to the Vrbanja's flow within the broader river network of the region (Kotor-Varoš municipality).

Course and tributaries

The headwaters of Kovačevića potok arise in the Guzovina–Vis elevation complex, where several small mountain springs and creeks descend forested slopes. Notable source streams reported locally include:

  • Tocil, originating at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level;
  • Duboki potok (literally "Deep creek"), arising near 900 metres;
  • a smaller, unnamed creek with a source elevation around 940 metres.

Hydrologically, Tocil and Duboki potok join first; their combined flow then receives the unnamed creek between the villages of Durakovići and Kovacevići at roughly 672 metres altitude. The stream follows a generally downhill alignment alongside the regional road R-440 connecting Šiprage and Kruševo Brdo before reaching the Vrbanja.

Topography, geology and ecology

Kovačevića potok runs through a landscape typical of the lower Dinaric foothills: a mix of wooded slopes, pastures and small rural settlements. The local relief is relatively steep over its short length, producing a swift, cool flow that supports riparian shrubs and freshwater invertebrates common to upland streams. To the south, the stream’s basin is separated from the Čudnić basin by a local rise known as Arab Hill, which forms a minor watershed divide.

Human use and historical notes

Small streams like Kovačevića potok were historically important for local economies. In the mid-20th century the stream powered several grain mills; reports indicate there were five watermills along its course during the 1960s, reflecting traditional rural use of hydropower for milling and small-scale industry (watermills). Such mills were typically timber-and-stone constructions adapted to the modest flows of mountain creeks and played a role in village life and local agriculture.

Access, significance and conservation

The stream is easily reached from the R-440 road linking Šiprage and Kruševo Brdo, making it accessible to visitors interested in rural landscapes, local history and short field studies of upland freshwater habitats. While Kovačevića potok is not widely known beyond its immediate area, it illustrates common features of small tributary systems in the region—short length, steep gradient, seasonal variability and historical human use. Any discussion of conservation or current ecological status should refer to local authorities and contemporary studies for up-to-date information.
