Overview

The Korean International Circuit is a purpose-built motor racing complex located in Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province of South Korea. It lies on the country’s southwest coast and is roughly 400 kilometres from the capital, Seoul. The site was developed to bring top-level international motorsport to the region, with the primary aim of hosting the Formula One Korean Grand Prix.

The facility sits at coordinates 34°43′58″N 126°23′32″E and was designed to offer a modern racing environment with multiple configurations for different categories. The main grand prix layout measures approximately 5.6 kilometres in length and includes a long start–finish straight, a pit complex and a mix of high-speed and technical corners. The complex also incorporates spectator grandstands, paddock and hospitality areas, and support circuits for local motorsport activities.

Design and construction

The circuit was conceived in the late 2000s amid a push to expand international sporting events in South Korea. Construction was fast-tracked to meet a contract to stage Formula One races beginning in 2010. The design follows contemporary standards for international racetracks and allows several possible layouts to accommodate club races, testing and major international events. The development attracted attention for its scale and for the logistical challenge of serving a relatively rural district.
