Overview
Kohalpur (Nepali: कोहलपुर) is a municipality in Banke District in southwestern Nepal. Positioned near the city of Nepalgunj and approximately six kilometres from the Indian frontier, Kohalpur serves as an emerging urban center that links surrounding rural areas to larger markets. Administratively it lies within what was formerly called Province No. 5 and the older Bheri Zone.
History and administration
The modern municipality was created on 18 May 2014 by combining two village development committees: Kohalpur and Rajhena. This change was part of a broader municipal expansion across Nepal intended to improve local governance and service delivery. The area retains historical ties to the Bheri Zone (Bheri) while adapting to the country’s federal provincial structure.
Economy and transport
Kohalpur functions largely as a transport and commercial gateway. Roads link the town to major settlements to the east, west, north and south, making it a convenient transfer point for goods and passengers moving across the region. Proximity to the India–Nepal border encourages cross‑border trade and periodic market activity. Agriculture from nearby villages, small-scale trade, and transport-related services form the backbone of the local economy.
Infrastructure and services
Urbanization has brought growth in basic public services, although development is uneven. The municipality hosts primary and secondary schools, health posts and local markets. Road upgrades and expanding public transport improve regional access, while demand for more extensive utilities and secondary education continues to rise as the town grows.
Significance and outlook
As a developing hub in Banke District, Kohalpur plays a role in regional connectivity and rural‑urban exchange. Its location near Nepalgunj and close to the international border supports commerce and mobility. Ongoing municipal planning aims to strengthen infrastructure and local governance to better support economic activity and public services.
