Historical context

In the closing days of World War II many anti‑Partisan forces and accompanying civilians attempted to flee towards Allied‑held Austria. Groups that surrendered or were repatriated from Austria—an episode often discussed in connection with events at Bleiburg and subsequent returns—were sometimes taken into custody by Yugoslav Partisan authorities. The killings at Kočevski Rog took place within this broader pattern of postwar reprisals across Yugoslavia, as the victorious Partisans sought to eliminate organised opposition and punish those regarded as collaborators.

Victims included members of the Slovene Home Guard, captured Ustaše or other Axis‑aligned fighters present in the area, and a number of civilians.
