Geography and borders

The district covers a predominantly mountainous area in the Kitzbühel Alps with varied terrain of peaks, alpine meadows and river valleys. It has an area of about 1,163.06 km². To the north it meets Bavaria and to the west it borders the Tyrolean districts of Kufstein and Schwaz. The eastern and southern edges meet parts of the Pinzgau region in the state of Salzburg.

The district contains the statutory town of Kitzbühel together with numerous smaller municipalities, market towns and villages that serve as local centres for commerce and services. As of 2012 the district had a population of approximately 61,966 residents; population density is low outside the main towns and rises sharply in tourist centres during the high season.
