Overview

The Karlovy Vary Region, sometimes called the Carlsbad Region, is an administrative region in the western part of the Czech Republic. It is best known for its concentration of thermal springs and historic spa towns. The region is an important center for health tourism, cultural events and traditional crafts, and it maintains economic and transport links across the border with Germany. For official information see regional sources.

Geography and natural features

The landscape combines low mountain ranges, forested plateaus and river valleys. Parts of the Ore Mountains and the Slavkov Forest (Slavkovský les) rise within the region, and the Ohře (Eger) river is a significant watercourse. Thermal and mineral springs emerge from geological faults and have shaped settlement patterns and architecture around the springs.

Spa culture, towns and traditions

The regional capital is Karlovy Vary, internationally famous as a spa resort. Other notable spa towns include Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně. These towns are characterized by colonnades, pump rooms, historic hotels and promenades built around mineral springs. Spa treatments, balneotherapy and wellness tourism form a core part of the local economy and cultural identity. The region also hosts internationally known events such as film and cultural festivals.

Economy, crafts and industry

Beyond health tourism, the Karlovy Vary Region has long traditions in glassmaking, porcelain and liqueur production; artisanal glass and crystal, and herbal liqueurs associated with the area, are widely recognized. Small and medium enterprises, hospitality services and regional manufacturing coexist with natural-resource‑based activities and cross-border commerce.

Administration and main settlements

Administratively the region is divided into three districts and a number of municipalities. The principal urban centers include the regional capital and several smaller towns that serve as local cultural and economic hubs.

  • Districts: Karlovy Vary, Cheb, Sokolov
  • Main spa towns: Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně
