Karaikudi is a municipality in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the principal town of the Chettinadu region and has been officially recognised as a heritage town by the state government. According to the 2011 census the urban area had a population of about 106,714 and a literacy rate around 81.5%, higher than the national average at that time.

Karaikudi is best known for the elaborate mansions built by the Nattukottai Chettiars (Chettiar merchant community). These homes commonly feature wide central courtyards, tall wooden columns, ornate plasterwork, marble and teak fittings, and long verandahs. Traditional Chettinadu craft includes carved doors, encaustic tiles and decorative tile-work that reflect trade connections to Southeast Asia and Europe.
