Architecture and cultural character
Karaikudi is best known for the elaborate mansions built by the Nattukottai Chettiars (Chettiar merchant community). These homes commonly feature wide central courtyards, tall wooden columns, ornate plasterwork, marble and teak fittings, and long verandahs. Traditional Chettinadu craft includes carved doors, encaustic tiles and decorative tile-work that reflect trade connections to Southeast Asia and Europe.
History and community
The town’s identity is closely linked to the Chettiar community, historically engaged in banking, trade and finance across South and Southeast Asia. Over generations they channelled wealth into large family houses, community temples and schools, shaping the built and social landscape of Karaikudi and surrounding villages.
