Habitats and wildlife

The park contains several distinct plant communities that support a variety of wildlife. Visitors encounter sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves and river swamps as they move through the landscape. In 1985 the Loxahatchee was designated a National Wild and Scenic River — the first such designation in Florida — recognizing its natural, cultural and recreational values. The park preserves examples of predevelopment coastal landscapes and serves as a site for studying regional ecology.
