Izhevsk — Capital and Industrial Center of the Udmurt Republic

History

Izhevsk began as a state armory and metallurgical settlement in the 18th century and developed around manufacturing for defense and civil needs. Over time it expanded into a major engineering and industrial hub. For a brief period in the 1980s the city was renamed Ustinov; the historic name Izhevsk was restored after a few years.

Economy and industry

The city’s economy is strongly shaped by heavy industry, precision engineering and metallurgy. Factories and research facilities in Izhevsk have produced small arms, machinery, and components for transport and energy sectors. Manufacturing and related engineering services remain principal employers, alongside growing commercial and service sectors.
