Geology and paleontology

The park encompasses the type section of the Ischigualasto Formation, a set of river, floodplain and volcanic-ash deposits that record environments of over 200 million years ago. These rocks have yielded a rich assemblage of fossil plants and vertebrates, among them some of the earliest known dinosaur remains and close relatives. The fossil record preserved here has been central to understanding the rise of dinosaurs and Late Triassic ecosystems, and continues to be the focus of paleontological fieldwork and research (fossil studies).
