Geography and environment

Ioannina occupies a low-lying basin beside Lake Pamvotida (also called Lake Ioannina) and is enclosed by high ground. Mitsikeli Mountain rises just northeast of the city, while the larger Pindus range frames the wider region to the east and southeast. The local climate is Mediterranean with mountain influences: warm summers, cool winters and varied precipitation that supports rich vegetation across the lake plain and upland forests.

History and development

Ioannina has a long history as a crossroads of Byzantine, Ottoman and Greek influences. Its medieval fortress complex and historic quarter reflect centuries of urban continuity. During Ottoman rule the city became an important administrative and commercial centre; in the late 18th and early 19th centuries it was associated with the local ruler Ali Pasha, whose residence and legacy remain part of the city’s heritage.
