Geography and setting

History and development

Hudson grew in the 19th century as river transport and later rail connections promoted settlement and trade. The community developed a compact downtown near the river that retains a concentration of 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, reflecting its role as a regional trading center and county government seat. Over time the local economy diversified from river and rail commerce to services, retail, and tourism.

Today Hudson is recognized for its preserved historic core and for access to outdoor amenities such as boating, fishing, and riverfront parks. The nearby St. Croix River corridor is part of a nationally valued scenic river system that attracts visitors for paddling and nature observation.
