House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) — a major Roman Republican domus in Pompeii

Architecture and plan

The domus follows the traditional Roman sequence of public and private spaces around axial rooms and a central garden (peristyle). Visitors entered through a monumental street frontage leading into an atrium with an impluvium and onto a wide peristyle courtyard. Surrounding rooms included cubicula (bedrooms), triclinia (dining rooms), tablinum (reception/office), service quarters and small nymphaea. The house is notable for the use of imported marbles, elaborate floor mosaics, and carved decorative elements that emphasise both hospitality and status.

Major artworks and decoration

• Bronze faun: a small bronze statue of a dancing faun gave the house its modern name and illustrates Hellenistic sculptural taste.
• Alexander Mosaic: a large, detailed floor mosaic depicting Alexander the Great’s battle scenes originally covered a dining-room floor; the original is now conserved in a museum, with a copy displayed at the site.
• Polychrome mosaics and frescoes: many rooms retain geometric and figural floors and wall paintings showing mythological and everyday themes.

History of discovery

The House of the Faun was exposed during systematic excavations of Pompeii and became a landmark find because of its size and the quality of its contents. Archaeologists removed fragile works for conservation; several of the finest pieces, including the Alexander Mosaic, are now housed in the National Archaeological Museum, while the building itself remains an important open-air exhibit within the ruined city.
