History

The origins of the town date back to 1700, when it was called Villa de Pitic. The town only adopted its current name in 1828 in honour of the general and independence fighter José María González de Hermosillo. In 1881, a railway line was opened from Hermosillo to Guaymas, and as trade and agriculture grew, the population increased to 14,000 by the end of the 19th century.

During the Mexican Revolution, the city was the capital of Mexico for a few months and the seat of Venustiano Carranza's cabinet.

A major fire at a kindergarten in the city killed 43 young children on June 5, 2009, a Friday. Subsequently, the improvement of fire safety regulations for such facilities was discussed by the Mexican public.
