Gove County is a sparsely populated county in the central United States, located in the state of Kansas. It lies on the High Plains and is representative of the rural agricultural counties that cover much of western Kansas. The county uses the state code GO and contains a mix of small towns, farms and open prairie.
Overview and administration
The county seat is Gove City, the administrative center where local government is based. The largest municipality is the city of Quinter, which serves as a local commercial hub for surrounding farms and ranches. The county is governed by elected officials who oversee services typical of rural counties: roads, law enforcement, land records and local planning.
History and development
Like much of the region, the area that became Gove County was occupied by Native American peoples before Euro‑American settlement. Settlement by homesteaders and the arrival of transportation links in the late 19th century encouraged town formation and farming. Over the 20th century, mechanization and changing agricultural markets shaped population and land use.
Geography and transportation
Gove County is part of the High Plains: flat to gently rolling land suited to dryland farming and cattle grazing. A major east–west highway, Interstate 70 and its historic counterpart U.S. Route 40, crosses the county, providing regional connections for people and goods. Much of the county consists of private farmland, with small clusters of residences and town centers.
Population, economy and communities
At the 2010 census the county had a population of 2,695, reflecting its character as a low‑density rural area. Agriculture—particularly grain crops and livestock—remains the economic backbone, supported by local services and small businesses in towns such as Gove City, Quinter, Grainfield and Park. Demographic trends have generally followed those of many Great Plains counties, with aging populations and occasional population decline as younger residents move to urban areas.
