Gonaïves — Port city and departmental capital in western Haiti

Geography and administration

Gonaïves occupies a low coastal plain with nearby agricultural land that supplies much of the local trade. As the chief town of an arrondissement of the same name, it administers several communes, including Ennery and Estère. The municipal structure follows the Haitian system of departments and communes, similar to other municipal arrangements in the country.

History and significance

The city holds a prominent place in Haitian history: it is famously associated with the proclamation of Haitian independence at the start of the nineteenth century and remains a symbol of the country’s revolutionary past.
