Gijón (Asturian: Xixón) is a coastal city in the north of Asturias, in Spain. Located along the Cantabrian shoreline, the municipality is the most populous in the region, with about 275,274 residents.

Location

The city sits on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, and its urban area stretches along a sheltered bay and nearby hills. Gijón lies roughly 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Oviedo, the region's administrative centre, and serves as an important local hub for commerce and services.

Administration

Gijón is part of the wider political entity of the autonomous community of Asturias. The municipality has its own local government responsible for urban planning, public services and cultural activities within the city limits.

Population and economy

With a population approaching 275,000, Gijón is Asturias's largest city by number of inhabitants. Its economy combines port activity, light industry, tourism and a range of service-sector businesses that serve the urban area and surrounding municipalities.

Transport and culture

  • Transport links include road and rail connections to other parts of Asturias and northern Spain, and maritime facilities that support both commercial and recreational use.
  • The city offers museums, public parks, and cultural programmes that reflect its maritime heritage and regional traditions.

Gijón's coastal position, demographic weight and cultural offerings make it a principal urban centre in northern Spain and a focal point for the Asturias region.
