Overview
Geir Ivarsøy was a Norwegian software engineer born on June 27 1957 and who died on March 9 2006. He is best known as the main programmer behind the early development of the browser produced by Opera Software. His work helped convert a small research project into a widely used, compact web browser and a recognizable software company.
Origins and early work
Ivarsøy and colleague Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner began their work inside a research group at the Norwegian state telephone company. There they developed an experimental piece of browsing software originally called MultiTorg Opera. When the parent company declined to continue the project, the two developers sought the rights to the code and in 1995 secured permission to continue development independently.
Founding Opera and company growth
After obtaining rights to the project, Ivarsøy and his partners established a company to maintain and commercialize the browser. The product matured into a cross‑platform Internet browser distributed to end users and to device makers, and the company expanded from a small team into an international organization based in Oslo. Over time Opera Software grew significantly, at one point reporting more than 380 employees as it added development, sales and support staff.
Role, approach and contributions
As lead developer, Ivarsøy focused on creating a lightweight, responsive browser core that could run on a variety of platforms. The project emphasized efficient resource use, standards compliance and features that distinguished it from larger competitors. While later additions and product lines were driven by a growing team, Ivarsøy's technical stewardship in the project's formative years set priorities that influenced Opera's engineering culture.
Later years and legacy
In January 2004 Ivarsøy stepped down from Opera's board but continued his technical work within the company and later served on its nomination committee. He died in March 2006 after a battle with cancer. Today his contributions are remembered for helping to launch one of the long‑standing alternative web browsers and for contributing to Norway's software and internet technology scene.
Notable facts
- Early code and concepts began as a research project inside a state telecom organization; the roots trace to work at the former national telephone company that enabled the project's initial funding and staffing (company).
- The original project name was MultiTorg Opera, later simplified and branded under the company name (browsing software).
- Key dates and milestones in Ivarsøy's life and the project's transition are often referenced by their original announcements and timelines (see 1995).
